July/August 2009

Dear Precious Parent:

Summer has definitely arrived in Oklahoma. It is hot in the day time, and it is hot at night. But about 8:30 in the evening it feels a little cooler (make that a little less warm--smile), and the best part is that there is still about an hour of sunlight left. One thing I really enjoy doing at that time is riding my bicycle. I enjoy the wind blowing in my face; as well as, checking out God's creation: the trees, flowers, birds, fireflies (they mesmerize me), the moon and stars coming out. Recently, as I was riding my bike, thoughts began to form about what I would share with you this time.

I thought about how, in the summer time, it can be more challenging for me to be consistent with my daily time with the Lord.  Life is more lazy and laid back, generally less structured. It's easy to become slack in my regular routine of reading my Bible, talking with God and listening for Him to talk with me. Do you experience that too?

Whoa, let me back up and read the above paragraph again, "daily time WITH THE LORD" and "reading my Bible, talking with God and listening for HIM TO TALK WITH ME" that sounds pretty exciting and here I am making it sound like a dental appointment! "Regular routine"? What can be regular or routine about having a relationship with the One who made me and knows me better than I know myself; The One who loves me always and forever; The One who ransomed my life by His own life? And yet, it is a reality that I can't deny--in the Summer it CAN be more challenging for me to meet with Jesus each day. But, oh, it is so worth it! Jesus is very good and faithful to meet me in the secret, quiet place. That reminds me of a song. Perhaps you know it.

In the Secret
written by Chris Tomlin
(Youtube you can see video as sung by Sonic Flood)

In the secret, in the quiet place;
In the stillness You are there.
In the secret, in the quiet hour I wait,
Only for You, 'cause I want to know You more.

I want to know You,
I want to hear Your voice
I want to know You more.
I want to touch You,
I want to see Your face
I want to know You more.

I am reaching for the highest goal,
that I might receive the prize.
Pressing onward, pushing every hindrance aside,
Out of my way, 'cause I want to know you more.

I want to know You,
I want to hear Your voice
I want to know You more.
I want to touch You,
I want to see Your face
I want to know You more.

In the secret, in the quiet place
In the stillness You are there.

Amazing isn't it? When we make time for Jesus, He really shows up! It is there in the secret, quiet place that we experience His peace, His joy, His love, His forgiveness, His comfort, AND we get to know HIM more! It is there that we share our heart. It is there that we share our joys. It is there that we share our cares and burdens--KNOWING THAT HE CARES FOR US. He is concerned about what concerns us.

In the secret, quiet place as you pray for your children this Summer, I encourage you to use the JULY Scripture Prayer Calendar below*. Praying the scriptures is a great way to pray. Then in AUGUST scroll down to the "31 Powerful Ways to PRAY for Your Children"*. Each day you will be praying a specific godly characteristic over your children. I have learned through the years that whether our children are toddlers or all grown up, they still need our prayers. What a joy that we can approach the throne of grace knowing the merciful truth of James 5:16b, "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."

And by the way . . .
Precious parent, this Summer I have a prayer for you (and me too):
MAY OUR SOULS RUN TO FOLLOW HARD AFTER JESUS, AMEN (Psalm 53:8).

Joining with you in the secret, quiet place today! God bless you my friend.

Love,
Rhonda

PS: HAVE YOU HEARD? Luke and Angela are expecting a girl October 19. Her name is Elizabeth Pearl. I appreciate your prayers for mommy and baby. Thank you.
